How to Negotiate for Flexibility
by Stew Friedman

Director, Wharton Work/Life Integration Program

The key to negotiating flexibility is to experiment continually with arrangements for getting things done that improve demonstrably your ability to (a) meet the performance expectations of your key stakeholders – the most important people in your future, at work, at home, and in the community – and (b) enrich your mind, body, and spirit.

The goal is to create a new way of getting things done. And this is what leaders do. So think of negotiating flexibility as leading change. The essentials in this game are a compelling vision and committed followers. Start with your vision of what you would like to see happen. Ask yourself, does this picture inspire you? Will it inspire others? If not, revise it. Repeat this cycle as necessary, drawing on feedback from people you trust.
