Founded in 2012, NSBR works with the goal of ensuring every student in Baton Rouge has access to an excellent school, inspiring all students, and preparing them for success after high school. NSBR works with families, school partners, and community leaders to identify citywide needs in education, then provides grants and develops strategic partnerships to address these needs. NSBR fundraises, nationally and locally, to enable these investments in the city. NSBR has invested $85 million to support students, families, and schools to date. About the Role

What You'll Do

The Managing Director of Growth (MDG) will be a critical new senior leader for NSBR. In this role, you will be an important partner to the CEO, executing and evolving NSBR's growth strategy. You will be responsible for driving NSBR's strategic growth initiatives and scaling the impact of our work by identifying, influencing, and funding high quality charter schools with the overall goal of opening excellent new schools in Baton Rouge. You'll lead our work to measure our impact, tell our story, and find additional champions for our mission. As MDG, you will report to Noemi Donoso, NSBR's CEO, and will be a member of the leadership team.

Key Responsibilities

Implement the NSBR's comprehensive growth strategy to expand access to excellent schools for more Baton Rouge families

  • Refine and implement the plan to expand the number of high-quality seats available to students in Baton Rouge, in alignment with the organization's mission and goals
  • Oversee the process to cultivate and recruit new schools in Baton Rouge
  • Actively manage the due diligence process for prospective operators, identifying and surfacing key strategic questions and issues as needed
  • Partner closely with the Managing Director of Achievement and the CEO to execute the investment systems and protocol in order to rigorously select high-quality operators for NSBR school launch investments
  • Ensure strong partnerships with executive leadership across all portfolio schools and charter networks
  • Assist in the transition of new school operators to Baton Rouge by providing local policy and political context, supporting the authorization process, and ensuring a viable facilities plan
  • Develop and manage relationships with key stakeholders to support program expansion and funding opportunities, including identifying and cultivating strategic partnerships with educational institutions, community organizations, and corporate sponsors

Lead NSBR's data and policy strategy at the federal, state, and local level to ensure we can achieve our impact and reach goals in Baton Rouge

  • Oversee NSBR's approach to the systematic collection, warehousing, and analysis of data including state performance data and interim assessment data
  • Analyze quantitative and qualitative data to create actionable insights and identify patterns, designing solutions to common challenges and increase impact
  • In partnership with your team, ensure NSBR stays up to date on key policy issues as they arise -- including school accountability, charter authorization, charter renewal, funding, and district/charter policy; ensure an agile organizational response to any policy changes
  • Ensure the CEO and NSBR's Board of Directors are knowledgeable of key policy issues and opportunities that may impact the mission-critical work
  • Develop strong partnerships and relationships with key stakeholders across all levels
  • Ensure strong partnerships with charter authorizers to advance our efforts to bring more high quality schools to Baton Rouge
  • Support Chief of Staff and CEO in telling the story of NSBR's impact with funders and other stakeholders

Manage and lead a high performing team to achieve ambitious outcomes

  • Partner with the CEO and senior leadership team to uphold and cultivate a culture of collaboration, accountability, and sustainability, focused on serving students and families and aligning with NSBR's mission
  • Develop and implement a vision for an effective, growth-oriented team
  • Lead team to set annual goals that advance NSBR's priorities
  • Support direct reports in achieving their aligned individual goals and understanding how they contribute to NSBR's mission
  • Ensure the growth, development, and retention of team members through expert management and coaching
  • Manage team budget and resources, including time and effort of employees and consultants

Who You'll Work With

You will report to the Chief Executive Officer, sit on the senior leadership team, and collaborate frequently with the Managing Director of Achievement and Chief of Staff. You will directly manage a Director of Growth and a Data Analyst.

Required Skills and Experience

Experience
At least 10 years relevant experience and 5 years leadership experience, specifically:

  • Working in strategy or consulting in K-12 education, with a preference for charter school experience
  • Experience overseeing complex data analysis and impact storytelling
  • Experience leading a high performing team to ambitious results
  • Start-up experience preferred

Qualifications

  • Excellent organization skills—demonstrated ability to structure work into timelines and deliverables and think ahead proactively to address dependencies and roadblocks
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills—demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with school leaders and other education professionals
  • Deep knowledge of K-12 education landscape, preferably with knowledge of charter school and/or Louisiana landscape
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem solving skills with a track record of using data to inform decision making and to influence outcomes
  • Resilience, strong work ethic, and outcomes orientation—demonstrated ability to balance competing priorities under stress and follow through despite sometimes tight or unexpected deadlines
  • Ability to learn quickly, accept and use feedback, work effectively under pressure, and manage a diverse workload
  • Demonstrated track record of leading and working with high levels of excellence; high comfort with ambiguity and tolerance for uncertainty
  • Ability to serve as an organizational leader both internally and externally, with experience influencing without authority and effectively managing up, down, and across
  • A high degree of humility, self-awareness, and a demonstrated commitment to learning and continuous improvement

Education

  • Bachelor's degree required, Graduate degree preferred

Additional Details

Compensation

This is a full-time role offering compensation that is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications. The salary range for this role is $145,000 to $175,000. In addition, NSBR provides a comprehensive benefits package that includes individual health and dental insurance, paid time off, and a 401(k) plan with company-matching contributions.

Location/Travel

  • Willingness to work in the office and in communities 60-80% and from home approximately 20% of the time
  • Willingness to live in Baton Rouge or surrounding communities
  • Willingness to work some weekends and evenings
  • Occasional travel across the United States
  • Ability to travel locally to various school sites and external partner organizations both during and after typical work hours
