About the Role
What You'll Do
The Executive Director (ED) will serve as a visionary, strategic, and innovative leader who will drive the long-term growth and success of NBHWC. The ED assumes a pivotal role in overseeing the comprehensive administration, programs, strategic initiatives, and operations of the organization. The ED is tasked with guiding the organization's growth and development, and ensuring adherence to the organization's mission and vision while driving forward its strategic objectives. The ED will lead our team of 5 full-time staff members and be accountable for the development and execution of the organization's strategic plan. In addition, the ED will serve as the external face of the organization and design and execute the organization's external communication and engagement strategy.
This is an ideal opportunity for someone who has deep experience creating systems, structures, and processes to further develop and enhance the way an organization functions; who has previously worked closely with a Board of Directors; and who has participated in or led a strategic planning process.
Key Responsibilities
Organizational Leadership and Team Management
- In partnership with the Board of Directors and staff, develop and execute strategic plans aligned with organizational goals and priorities, fostering a culture of innovation and excellence.
- Provide visionary leadership to all staff members, ensuring alignment with the organization's mission and core values, and have ultimate accountability for the success of the organization through oversight of staff and day-to-day operations.
- Drive organization-wide results with inspirational leadership, effective and supportive management, and well-defined objectives with accountability mechanisms and key performance indicators to track progress.
- Spearhead initiatives to enhance the value proposition of board certification, fostering strong relationships with relevant stakeholders.
- Partner with departmental leaders and commission chairs to ensure seamless integration of organizational strategies and policies and provide guidance and support to commission activities, ensuring they remain in sync with organizational objectives.
- Establish and maintain a professional, motivating, and supportive team environment and organizational culture.
- Promote and model an inclusive, equitable, and welcoming culture that embodies NBHWC's values.
Governance and Financial Management
- Ensure effective and responsible fiscal and operational management of the organization's $2M budget, working in partnership with key staff to oversee the fiscal operations of the organization, including budget formulation and financial reporting
- Work in collaboration with the Board of Directors Finance Committee members to ensure prudent financial management practices are in place to sustain organizational activities and initiatives.
- Collaborate closely with the Board of Directors to establish and enforce effective policies and procedures; serve as the primary liaison between the board and staff, facilitating communication and ensuring informed decision-making.
- Work with the Board of Directors Nominating Committee to identify and fill gaps within the Board of Directors as appropriate.
Marketing and Communications Oversight
- Develop and implement comprehensive marketing and communications strategies to promote the NBHWC brand and its initiatives effectively, working in collaboration with Marketing staff and agencies as necessary to leverage expertise and resources for enhanced visibility and engagement.
- Oversee marketing campaigns, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives and maximizing reach and impact.
- Maintain and deepen a strong NBHWC brand and presence through website, online presence, media and public relations, and thought leadership.
External Relations and Stakeholder Engagement
- Serve as NBHWC's chief representative, speaking publicly about the organization's work to the media, at conferences, and at other public/private events to elevate the profession of health and wellness coaching and the NBC-HWC credential.
- Represent NBHWC effectively with partners, members, and other key stakeholders across a wide variety of settings, maintaining an active and visible presence in the community.
- Collaborate with key partners, thought leaders, and stakeholders within the health and wellness coaching profession and healthcare sector to forge robust relationships and build partnership and coalitions
- Stay abreast of legislative developments and policy initiatives at both state and national levels affecting the health and wellness coaching profession.
- Cultivate partnerships with organizations to advance the professional development and career pathways of National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coaches.
Who You'll Work With
You will report to the NBHWC Board of Directors.
You will supervise the organizational team of 5 full-time staff members.
Required Skills and Experience
- At least 15 years of professional experience with at least 5 years of demonstrated senior leadership experience, with a strong understanding of best practices in nonprofit management
- Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred (or equivalent experience)
- Deep professional experience in and understanding of the health and wellness sectors
- Proven experience scaling a team, program, or organization effectively and strategically, with sustainability in mind
- Excellence in organizational and people management with the ability to coach staff, manage and develop high-performing teams, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget
- Strong strategic thinking skills, with a proven track record of developing and implementing integrated plans in pursuit of organizational goals; a demonstrated ability to translate a vision into a direction that adds distinct value and builds competitive advantage
- Exceptional listening and communications skills, including strong written and verbal communications, excellent interpersonal skills, and demonstrated learning orientation
- Strong marketing, public relations, and external relations acumen with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures
- Experience and general knowledge of nonprofit finance; ability to create and manage budgets and set/manage financial controls
- Strong cultural humility and a proven ability to engage and lead diverse groups in support of a common mission with a shared sense of team and culture
