About the Role

What You'll Do

Reporting to the VP, Finance and Operations, the Director of Finance is responsible for planning, directing, and controlling financial resources to support the strategic direction of Hopelab. The Director of Finance holds a high-level view of Hopelab's finance operations and manages the detail that supports its activities.

The Director of Finance establishes and oversees the accounting, budgeting, payroll, and cash management operations consistent with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and applicable laws/regulations. This position is also responsible for training staff in budget development and monitoring, and for developing tools that enhance staff budget management skills.

The Director of Finance creates effective finance systems, policies, procedures, and internal controls that seamlessly support Hopelab's operations. This role supervises the Accounting Manager, who supports Hopelab's monthly and daily accounting functions. This role also manages the valuations reports vendor.

Key Responsibilities

Leading Budgeting and Financial Reporting:

  • Designs, prepares, and delivers accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting materials and metrics to the VP of Finance and Operations.
  • Responsible for ensuring accurate and timely filing of all financial reporting as required by government, regulatory agencies, and funding agencies.
  • Responsible for developing and directing the organization's internal controls and financial policies.
  • Stays current with all applicable accounting, budgeting, tax, and other regulations and requirements for non-profit organizations, adapting policies, and practices accordingly. Proactively advises the VP, Finance and Operations on such changes where appropriate.
  • Develop and oversee annual budgets in collaboration with department leaders.
  • Identify and address budget variances, providing insights for financial adjustments.
  • Works with the VP, Finance and Operations to prepare the annual budget documents.
  • Streamline budgeting processes to enhance transparency and decision-making.
  • Serves as an expert and resource for all staff on budget and accounting issues. Can be called upon to explain complex budget concepts in simple and understandable terms.

Leading Audit and Board-related Deliverables:

  • Establishes and maintains an internal controls structure that protects Hopelab's assets against loss and unauthorized use and assures that transactions are executed with appropriate management authorization.
  • Leads external financial audit coordination and preparation of supporting schedules and documentation.
  • Leads, tax filings and regulatory reporting.
  • Manages vendor relationships to ensure accurate and complete valuation reports for Hopelab's social impact investment portfolio companies.
  • Prepares accurate and complete financial statements, budget overviews, and dashboards for the Board.

Leading Financial Operations:

  • Partner with the Head of People and Culture on benefits analysis and personnel-related financial matters.
  • Serves as a member of the Hopelab Investment Committee.
  • Serves as a member of Hopelab's 401K Plan Committee.
  • Responsible for incoming and outgoing grants management (incoming grants and outgoing grants), including compiling financial information requested for grant proposals, preparing grant reports for funders, preparing acknowledgment letters for funders, reviewing grant agreements, ensuring compliance with grant requirements, submitting budget reports, etc.
  • Leading a prompt and thorough monthly close process that includes review and approval of employee expense reports, company credit card expenses, proper documentation of monthly restricted grant releases, coordinating with outsourced accountants; and other related work.
  • Establishing and maintaining a Hopelab Finance Manual.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the VP, Finance & Operations

Required Skills and Experience

Education, experience, or special knowledge required to successfully perform the essential functions:

  • Bachelor's Degree required; CPA preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience in accounting and financial management preferably in nonprofit organizations.
  • Proficiency in accounting systems (Sage Intacct preferred).
  • Expertise in GAAP, financial reporting, and grants management
  • An interest in proactively identifying opportunities and solutions (leveraging technology to automate processes for efficiency and accuracy).
  • An interest in being a strategic thought partner.
  • Ability to take ownership of financial management
  • Proactively identifies risks, issues, and opportunities for enhancement.
  • Strong team management, training, and delegation skills.
  • Attention to detail to ensure accurate work products (identifying discrepancies, missing information, incorrect information before it comes to the VP, Finance and Operations).
  • Experience in completing audits.
  • Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
  • Excellent data validation, manipulation and visualization skills including Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, vlookup, xlookup, Index and Match and/or Power Query a plus), Power BI.


Physical Demands:

  • Ability to perform routine bending/stooping while filing.
  • Ability to perform routine twisting/reaching while working at a computer/desk.
  • Ability to perform routine walking/standing during the course of a day.
  • Ability to lift up to 10 pounds periodically.
  • Ability to hear and speak well enough to converse over the telephone 100% of the time.
  • Ability to see well enough to use a computer efficiently and read computer reports and correspondence 100% of the time.

Hopelab's compensation is tied to local job market data, so will differ by location. Here are some sample salaries for this role, commensurate with training and experience.   • SF Bay Area / NYC: Starting salary ($184,774 to $207,871). Full salary range ($184,774 to $230,968).
  • Los Angeles: Starting salary ($175,536 to $197,478). Full salary range ($175,536 to $219,420).
  • DC / Seattle: Starting salary ($166,297 to$187,084). Full salary range ($166,297 to $207,872).
  • Denver / Chicago: Starting salary ($157,059 to $176,691). Full salary range ($157,059 to $196,323).
  • Miami / Portland OR: Starting salary ($147,820 to $166,297). Full salary range ($147,820 to $184,775).
  • Madison WI: Starting salary ($138,581 to $155,904). Full salary range ($138,581 to $173,226).

In-Person and Travel Expectations
