About the Role
The Vice President of Finance will be a key member of Team Rubicon's financial leadership team, serving as the organization's chief financial strategist and a critical thought partner to the Executive Leadership Team (ELT). Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer and managing a team of 12, the VP will be charged with overseeing financial operations, ensuring fiscal integrity and regulatory compliance, and aligning financial strategies with the organization's mission, particularly with an eye towards maximizing efficiency, leveraging automation, and strengthening financial sustainability.
Financial Strategy & Organizational Leadership
- Develop and execute financial strategies in alignment with the CFO's vision and organizational goals, including strategies for financial sustainability, risk management, and long-term financial planning.
- Serve as a key advisor to the CFO and ELT on financial matters, leveraging financial data and insights to inform strategic decision-making; prepare and present financial reports to the CFO, Board of Directors, and Finance Committee as needed.
- Collaborate closely with the Development and Programs teams to ensure alignment between financial planning, programmatic goals, and overall organizational objectives.
- Spearhead systems and process improvements and lead technology transformations within the finance function to enhance forecasting, financial management, risk mitigation, and reporting, with a focus on leveraging AI and automation wherever possible.
- Manage and lead a finance and accounting team of 12, providing mentorship, professional development, coaching, and support.
- Promote a culture of solutions-orientation and trusted thought partnership across the finance function, serving as true business partners to the broader organization.
Financial Planning & Management
- Oversee the development of the annual budget, financial forecasts, and financial reports in coordination with the CFO, leveraging automation wherever possible to improve accuracy, streamline processes, and save costs.
- Assess, implement, and optimize financial systems and processes using automation and AI solutions.
- Oversee financial management of grants, restricted funds, and donor contributions; ensure compliance with grantor requirements, government regulations, and reporting obligations.
- Oversee payroll, benefits, and financial aspects of human resources in collaboration with HR leadership.
- Assist in risk management, including insurance coverage, legal compliance, and regulatory requirements.
- Monitor financial performance, analyze variances, and recommend corrective actions.
Accounting & Financial Reporting
- Oversee all aspects of Accounting, Risk Management, and FP&A.
- Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting in compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
- Support the organization's annual audit and tax filings (IRS Form 990).
- Maintain strong internal controls to safeguard financial assets and prevent fraud.
- Collaborate with key stakeholders, including auditors, and regulatory agencies.
- Foster a culture of financial transparency and accountability throughout the organization with continuous improvement and innovation in mind.
Who You'll Work With
- You will report to the Chief Financial Officer, Dane Barata.
- You will collaborate closely with the Executive Leadership Team.
- You will supervise a team of 12 including 3 Deputy Directors (Financial Planning & Analysis; Risk Management, Treasury, & Operations; and Accounting & Auditing) and 9 indirect reports.
Required Skills and Experience
- Bachelor's degree required, ideally in Finance, Accounting, or Business Administration; MBA or CPA preferred.
- 10+ years of progressive financial leadership experience blending both strategic finance and accounting, preferably in the nonprofit sector.
- Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting (GAAP, IRS regulations, and fund accounting).
- Experience managing complex budgets, grants, and financial reporting; familiarity with government contracts is preferred.
- Proven ability to develop and implement financial strategies that support organizational sustainability.
- Proven track record of developing and implementing systems and process improvements, particularly with an eye towards efficiency and automation.
- Strong grasp of technology; comfort and facility with the latest financial technologies, tools, and trends.
- Demonstrated management and leadership experience, including comfort partnering with executive leadership teams as well as managing and developing direct reports.
- Adept relationship manager with a strong service orientation and business partner mindset.
- High level of integrity, transparency, and commitment to the organization's mission.
