- Monitor broader developments across the Latin America and Caribbean region for opportunities, challenges, and threats with regard to reproductive rights, health, and justice
- Provide robust analyses of the media, political, public opinion, landscapes in target regions, countries, and localities
- Set detailed proposals for tactics, timelines, and budgets, and report out progress of work to relevant and key stakeholders, including the ED, Advisory Committee, and funders
Team Leadership
- Model WEC's values and serves as a culture carrier fostering an inclusive and collaborative environment for all who work in, with, and alongside WEC
- Participate in driving broader organizational strategy and direction acting as a thought leader and leveraging your communications expertise to assist in formulating future initiatives and approaches
- Serve as an organizational ambassador ensuring positive, effective, and collaborative working relationships across in-country organizations and teams
- Support the hiring, management, and development of in-house staff and external consultants with a focus on ensuring each person is well-positioned to achieve their goals
- Ensure the effective deployment of capital, people, and resources across communications projects
Who You'll Work With
- You will report to the Executive Director
- You will frequently collaborate with the peer Director of Strategic Communications and sit on the organization's leadership team, along with the other Directors
- You will partner closely with other members of the communications team, including Directors, Managers, Associate Directors, and Coordinators
- You will supervise project teams and in-country colleagues across specific communications work
Required Skills and Experience
A Note to Potential Candidates
Studies have shown that women, trans, non-binary folks, and BIPOC are less likely to apply for jobs unless they believe they meet every single one of the desired qualifications described in a job description. We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive organization, and we are most interested in finding the best candidate for the job. That candidate may be one who comes from a background less traditional to our field of work, and that's okay. We would strongly encourage you to apply, even if you don't believe you meet every one of the qualifications described.
Please note that part of the selection process will be conducted in Spanish.
Please apply if you are:
- Proactive and entrepreneurial: someone who brings passion and drive, and is not afraid to take risks
- A multi-tasker and proactive prioritizer: someone who is energized by working on many things at once yet able to sort through the important from the unimportant
- Humble but with a strong sense of self and the ability to hold others accountable to achieve goals
Additional qualifications include:
- Professional fluency in Spanish and English; ability to communicate with depth and nuance in writing and conversation in both languages (required)
- At least 11 years of strategic communications experience, ideally in developing, managing, and executing communications strategies for advancing progressive policy. This could include:
- Supporting litigation, community organizing, and other defensive actions; and/or influencing public opinion and catalyzing action on issues of reproductive health/rights/justice or social justice more generally at a social sector organization or agency
- Prior work on Capitol Hill or a U.S.-based political campaign
- Ability to work with a multi-cultural, multi-lingual, and deeply collaborative workforce; and demonstrate a sensitivity and appreciation of cultural differences
- An understanding of Latin America and the Caribbean, including insight into the politics, public opinion landscape, and coalition dynamics of key countries with regard to issues of reproductive and social justice is highly preferred but not required
- Excellent verbal and written skills with a track record of delivering strong written materials and presentations, including press releases, memos, op eds, social media content, crisis communication, proposals, and strategic plans
- Can work successfully and collaboratively with a variety of internal and external stakeholders and contributes expertise to broader organizational planning and vision scoping
- Ideally brings experience with coalition- and partnership-building
- Has managed small teams and has overseen consultant engagements, ensuring strong project outcomes
- Efficiency and comfort with technology, including Slack, Google Suite, CRMs; responsiveness via email and WhatsApp, and willingness to participate in weekly group calls or as needed
The above job description is not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required for the position. The incoming Director may be required to perform duties outside of their normal responsibilities from time to time, as needed.
