Expeditionary Learning (EL) is a national, non-profit, school reform organization with a mission to create schools where students reach higher levels of academic achievement and also are engaged as problem solvers, critical thinkers, active citizens and life-long learners. Through intensive on-site coaching and off-site professional development, Expeditionary Learning works with teachers and principals to transform every aspect of a school: curriculum & instruction, assessment for and of learning, leadership and key structures. Today, EL is partnering with 165 schools in 29 states and the District of Columbia, reaching 46,000 students and 4,000 teachers.

ABOUT THE POSITION:

EL is seeking a new Regional Director for a growing Mid-Atlantic Region, currently comprised of a portfolio of 22 schools in DC, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia, both charter and district, which cover the full K-12 span. The Regional Director will provide leadership and vision for a growing staff and coordinate school coaching, program development, school and community relationships, staff development and new business development. This position will report directly to the Chief Operating Officer.

This is an ideal opportunity for someone to play a key leadership role in a growing and dynamic organization committed to helping students across the U.S. reach higher levels of academic achievement.

Specific responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Coordinating the effective delivery of EL services to schools, ensuring that budgeted services are maximized, client satisfaction is enhanced and school performance is monitored and implemented.
  • Working with the Chief Growth Officer, to increase the number of schools working with EL, consistent with the organization's goals, objectives and capacity.
  • Planning and monitoring implementation of professional development activities for all regional staff.
  • Increasing awareness of EL and serving as the organizational ambassador in communities and districts where EL schools are located.
  • Providing leadership and vision for the national organization as a member of the national management team and assisting in planning and facilitating national conferences and professional development offerings.
  • Collaborating with the President and Chief Advancement Officer to cultivate and secure local philanthropic support.
  • Managing the regional office: recruiting, training and retaining qualified staff; overseeing work plans, overseeing budget and office technology.
CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS:

We are seeking candidates who believe deeply in EL’s mission and who display a record of achievement.

Successful candidates will also demonstrate:

  • Master’s Degree in Education, leadership or a related field
  • Required minimum 5 years classroom teaching experience, preferably in Expeditionary Learning or similar schools
  • Significant experience in school and/or district leadership
  • Experience teaching and facilitating adult professional learning
  • Strong people management skills and the ability to motivate, excite, inspire and educate both internal and external resources
  • Ability to make data-driven decisions and coach and mentor others on this approach
  • Proven ability to collaborate and build relationships with stakeholders across functional and organizational lines
  • Exceptional organizational skills, with an ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously and thrive in an entrepreneurial, fast-paced environment
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral
  • Willingness to travel 33% and work flexible hours - (e.g. ability to work and travel some weekends with comp days in return)
