Managing Director, iMentor NYC
ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:
iMentor is one of the most effective and innovative mentoring organizations in the country. Over the last ten years, iMentor has developed and refined a mentoring model that has driven four new innovations in the mentoring field: (1) iMentor’s technology-enriched mentoring model engages a new type of volunteer to serve as quality mentors; (2) iMentor’s curriculum, structure and support create mentoring relationships that play a significant and measurable role in closing the achievement gap for the youth we serve; (3) iMentor’s deep partnership with schools (whole class cohorts) provides the kind of individualized support that drives academic engagement and creates positive school culture; (4) iMentor Interactive is a new model of nationwide replication, providing non-profits and schools across the country with iMentor’s proven tools and resources -- it’s a “teach to fish” technical assistance model that empowers partner organizations to run their own high-impact mentoring programs. New York City Impact: By 2013, iMentor NYC will annually connect 3,000 high school-aged youth (mentees) one-to-one with volunteer adult mentors. Pairs build their relationship through weekly emails and monthly in-person meetings. During the 2008-09 program year, 92% of mentees graduated from high school and 82% enrolled in college. Compared to non-iMentor participants, mentees showed statistically significant increases in math grades, standardized test scores and attendance after participating in iMentor. National Impact: iMentor is helping other nonprofits launch or enhance mentoring programs through iMentor Interactive (iMi). iMi provides any organization with the tools, resources and programmatic support necessary to run a quality mentoring program. Currently, iMi works with 65 member organizations, serving more than 10,000 participants. Growth: iMentor is in the middle of an ambitious five year growth plan, which includes national expansion through iMentor Interactive, as well as growing the core mentoring program in New York City.
